Iraq Exchange: Part two- June 2012

Building on the relationships started during the 2011 NY/Iraq exchange we will once again welcome a group of Iraqi artists in NY.

After participating in “Global Performance, Civic Imagination, and Cultural Diplomacy” convening at Georgetown University in Washington DC we will return to New York with the Iraqi artists where we will present a special one night performance on June 18 of Heather Raffo’s “9 Parts of Desire” performed for the first time by an Iraqi Actress in Arabic.

Described by the New Yorker as "An example of how art can remake the world", Heather Raffo's 9 Parts of Desire is a portrait of the extraordinary (and ordinary) lives of a whole cross section of Iraqi women:  a sexy painter, a radical Communist, a doctor, an exile, wives, and lovers.  Delving into the many conflicting aspects of what it means to be a woman in the age-old war zone that is Iraq, this poetic work is an unusually timely meditation on the ancient, the modern and the feminine.
